Six Women-Owned Beauty Brands to support this Women’s History Month
March is Women’s History Month so we wanted to highlight some of the amazing women we have to thank for the beauty brands we know and love!
CEO and Executive Chair- Elizabeth A. Smith
Revlon was founded in 1932 by two brothers who started out selling nail enamel in salons. Over the years, the brand has morphed into a giant in the beauty industry. Today, the company is run by Elizabeth A. Smith, who also was the President of Avon in the early 2000’s. The previous CEO and President of Revlon was also a woman, Debra G Perelman!
Founder- Toni Ko
Toni Ko was only 25 years old when she started NYX Cosmetics on a loan from her parents. She began making only eyeliners and lipliners priced at $1.99 each. NYX made a name for itself in the beauty industry with great prices and great products before being bought by L’Oreal in 2014, becoming a drugstore makeup staple in the years since.
Founder- Essie Weingarten
In 1981, Essie Weingarten, a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan started the brand Essie with her life savings. Within the first year of operations, the popular nail polish was in thousands of salons across the country. The company is known for its high-quality pigments and a diverse set of colors to choose from. Essie was also acquired by L’Oreal in 2010.
Founder- Sally Hansen
Founded in 1946 by its namesake, Sally Hansen launched with only two products, including its “Hard as Nails” line. Since then, the brand has branched out to more than nail products, but is a household name for anyone who loves doing their nails at home. “BEAUTY TO A WOMAN IS POWER. POWER TO BELIEVE IN HERSELF.” – Sally Hansen
Founder- Jeanine Lobell
Stila was created in 1994 by a talented makeup artist, Jeanine Lobell. She wanted to create a brand that celebrated the beauty and individuality of women, and the company has become famous for its incredible formulas and revolutionary paper packaging.
Founders- Samantha Chapman and Nicola Haste
Two sisters, Samantha Chapman and Nicola Haste started out as beauty content creators on Youtube as ‘Pixiwoo’ before creating the now-iconic brand, Real Techniques. The brand focuses on makeup brushes and applicators, winning numerous awards for their high quality and performance!
